032 Weekly? Fortnightly? Random Tuesdays?

Struggling to pick a podcast release schedule that actually works for you? VIC Podcasters explores weekly, fortnightly, monthly, and seasonal options to help you stay consistent without burning out.

There’s no one-size-fits-all release schedule. Whether you’re running a brand or sharing stories for fun, the key is picking a rhythm that you can actually stick to. Weekly might be fab for growth, but if you're editing on a Sunday while juggling kids or a day job, that pressure builds up fast.

Fortnightly podcasts often strike a happy medium for many creators in our community. They offer enough consistency to keep your listeners engaged without requiring you to churn out content at a rate that leaves you crying into your editing software.

Monthly or seasonal formats are perfect for podcasters who need more space for life or want to deliver deep, juicy episodes that take time to craft. Whichever schedule you choose, keep your community in the loop through socials, your feed, and your email list. And if you’re stuck figuring it all out? That’s what I’m here for. Let’s work together to find a sustainable podcasting rhythm that suits your story and keeps you loving the mic.

Help me, when do I release podcast episodes? It's so overwhelming. Do I do it like every day or like once a month? How do I keep my audience? I'm confused. You're listening to the Victorian Podcasters Podcast, your bite-sized slice of podcasting know-how.

We'll put your money where your mouth is and join our emailing list and Facebook and LinkedIn groups for exclusive updates, resources, and our community Q&A, because podcasting doesn't have to be a solo gig. VicPodcasters is proudly produced on Wadawurrung land.

    (0:46 - 3:19)

Don't worry, don't panic. VicPodcasters is here to help out. So let's start off with ultimately it's your podcast, your mic, your rules.

There is no right schedule. You're not a radio station, unless you are, so if you are, say hi. But consistency beats frequency every time.

When it comes to a reliable schedule for yourself, setting one up that you are able to keep and keep consistently over time is better than one that just kind of appears whenever you're feeling up to the podcasting challenge. So when it comes to momentum, think about something that you can do. For example, if this podcast is a hobby of yours, maybe you may not have as much time as you would like, so a weekly podcast may not be the right call for you.

For example, maybe once a fortnight or once a month might be the right thing to go. How much effort and time will it take in your podcast? Is it just a conversation, or is it a interview, or what type of work behind the scenes does your podcast take? That in turn will help you figure out the right schedule to keep. A weekly podcast can also equal momentum, but also the pressure.

Coming from someone who does two weekly podcasts, it's great for growth, but if it's sustainable. For example, if you're doing it as a hobby, it may not be sustainable to do something like this weekly, but if you're, say, doing it as part of a brand or a business exercise as a way of marketing yourself, you will have that time to invest in something over a weekly period, so that might be better for you. Keep listeners engaged and habits strong, but burnout is real, so especially if you're solo, being able to batch episodes ahead of time will reduce that burnout and overwhelm, hopefully.

Of course, I am not you. For those of us who may not have the luxury of being able to do a weekly podcast, doing one fortnightly is still chill enough to be consistent, but it is a happy medium for most podcasts. It gives you breathing room between edits, guests, and other life stuff, but also still frequent enough to keep your podcast on the top of mind of those subscribers and followers of your podcast.

VicPodcasters was brought to you by the Video Confidence Coach. That's me, smashing your marketing mayhem with killer video strategies. Love ya! And another alternative is monthly podcasts, which is slow and steady, wins the race, but it is very different in regards to the type of podcast that you can get away with in building a steady audience when you have a podcast that only comes out once a month.

    (3:19 - 5:29)

It's ideal for deep dives or real big passion projects that require a lot of nuance, so there's less pressure, but you have to ultimately have a more polished product. And it helps if you have a community that is already standing by, ready every month, to also keep everything engaged and keep the momentum going outside of your actual podcast feed. For example, like a community like the VicPodcasters, or an email list, or something of that nature that helps drum up the momentum consistently over time.

When it comes to monthly podcasts, don't just disappear between drops, stay visible everywhere. And the last alternative that you can use when it comes to scheduling your podcast is using seasons, kind of like built-in breaks. So instead of being able to do a consistent weekly podcast for the entire year, maybe plan and batch, and rest and repeat, your podcast over, say, a season of, say, 12 episodes.

So you're able to use the rest of the year to work on the new season of a polished podcast, but you're not overwhelming yourself to trying to consistently push our contract every week, every fortnight, however long. It's like Netflix, but with fewer spoilers. And listeners know what to expect, and when, because hopefully you've communicated to them this over time.

And it is okay. I want to stress now for anyone listening, if you move between these different upload schedules, as long as you communicate this with your audience, both in the podcast feed and in, say, social media and the email list, make sure you communicate these changes. But it's whatever needs to work with you and your life, and for some of us, our business.

Let your life and your listeners decide. Choose what fits your capacity and your audience. Don't try and push yourself or burn yourself out trying to accommodate an audience who is always thirsty for more.

If you are juggling work, kids, and editing on a Sunday, or are you building a podcast empire in your spare room, quality always beats quantity. A fabulous fortnightly episode is much better than a rushed weekly ramshackled mess of a podcast. You don't need to feed the algorithm, you need to feed your audience's ears, and hopefully make them smile, laugh, or get educated in the subject of your podcast.

    (5:30 - 6:33)

Make sure when you're announcing your schedule, be it at the start of your podcast or when you're changing up your schedule, make sure you actually stick to it. It builds trust with your listeners, and if you can say weekly, mean it, or if that is not the case, adjust it. Listeners of a podcast will have a tendency of ghosting when you go MIA without warning them, so make sure that you use your breaks strategically.

If, say, for example, you've been doing weekly podcasts for, say, three or four months, maybe even half a year or up to a year, it is okay to take a break. And say, for example, if you need to take time to have, like I say, a mid-season break, it's not the end, you're allowed to take breaks. Just make sure, as we've already said, communicate that.

You can also do this by teasing what's coming up next and dropping up bonus episodes or bloopers if you need to pad some more time between you leaving and then coming back. It keeps their feeds warm and your audience keen and also you on top of mind. Wrapping up, make sure to choose a schedule that excites you but doesn't exhaust you.

    (6:34 - 7:24)

Communicate it clearly and lovingly to your audience either via the podcast feed, email newsletters, or social media. Remember, you're the boss of your own audio empire. That's a wrap.

Remember, we're here every week to share quick tips, updates, and the occasional bad joke. Feeling inspired? Good. Now hit record, or go to the show notes of this episode for a backstage past experience of the Victorian podcasting scene.
